When you first arrive at the Liberty National Golf Club, your eye travels to the east where waters sparkle in the sunlight with the majestic Statue of Liberty in the background, and then to the west at the bucolic hills of the Garden State which unfold onto the iconic Manhattan skyline and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.

“I believe Liberty was waiting to happen and wanting to happen,” says the club’s co-founder Paul Fireman. “It’s a very important and precious site. The geography of this part of the country is so significant.”

It is an oasis of golf that enhances the land upon which it sits, reflects the mission of its founders and respects its role in a historic region. In 1992, that year’s United States Open champion at Pebble Beach – the World Golf Hall of Famer Tom Kite – laid eyes on the land for the first time, and said, “Darn right I’m interested.” Kite soon enlisted his friend and co-designer, Bob Cupp, and the onset of a veritable dream team began to take shape. Eighteen unique golf holes were grown, stretching over 7,400 yards. Belgian cart-path stones were laid down.

Helipad and ferry services were included. A sparkling clubhouse rose above the 18th green, shimmering in perfect Manhattan style. In the years that have followed, Liberty National has found its way, thriving with a solid membership, and twice hosting the PGA Tour’s prestigious Barclays Tournament in 2009 and 2013.

Practice facilities are PGA certified and tour appropriate. The short play area consists of two uniquely designed greens bordered by bunkers and elevation changes, allowing golfers to practice a multitude of short game and bunker shots. The fitness center gives members and their guests some time to relax before a round of golf, including visits to the Spa, featuring private massage rooms, sauna, and Jacuzzi tubs. Executive Chef Shaun Lewis delivers pleasing flavors and an overall sense of wellbeing: from the Grille Room, to the Formal Dining Room, the Library, and covered outdoor Terrace, the Club provides an ambiance for all dining needs. The next event – The Northern Trust, First Stop of the FedEx Cup Playoffs – will be held from August 8-11, 2019.

It is the first of three events in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the culmination of a season-long competition of the PGA TOUR. Set in the metropolitan area of New York/New Jersey, The Northern Trust is a celebration of food, fashion, and the best golfers from the PGA Tour, offering fans an unrivaled experience. During a breakfast charity event last autumn, The Northern Trust announced a record $1.865 million for local area charities in 2018, bringing the total to nearly $50 million since its start in 1967.
