ICONIC YACHT| Laura Scatena
Moderation, a balance of volume and mass, and intrinsic elegance – these are immediately recognized as markings of Sanlorenzo. SX88 is the name of the new 27-meter motoryacht, first as a product range and then a complete series with smaller and larger models. It is conceptual evolution based on motoryacht principles of functionality and innovative esthetics, and built in the historic shipyard in Ameglia where Sanlorenzo’s general headquarters are located.

SX88 was launched last September at the Cannes Yachting Festival, and then at the Miami International Yacht Show in February: its functional and beautiful features are based on large open spaces and glazed surfaces that create expressive continuity between interior/exterior. Featuring a high bow, its profile lowers towards the stern, increasing the mass and creating decisive curves, making it able to face any situation.
It flows between full and empty; its wheelhouse is located on the upper deck like in a megayacht, the fly bridge is protected by a windshield that can be closed sideways if necessary, and the bridge’s whole stern area can be closed with strataglass panels or a mechanized rigid closure, upon request. This concept was conceived in Sanlorenzo’s style offices under architect Luca Santella, with collaboration from the creative flair of Officina Italiana Design, Mauro Micheli, and Sergio Beretta.
Water lines were designed by Lou Codega, famous American designer of fast oceanic fishing boats. “The timeless elegance of Sanlorenzo yachts, but above all the simple language that indentifies them, has found the perfect interpreter in Piero Lissoni”, says Massimo Perotti, Chairman/CEO Sanlorenzo. The project designed by Piero Lissoni for SX88’s interiors is based on an essential basic idea: design an open space boat in a unique and continual environment from stern to bow with an open kitchen next to the dining room, followed by a living area with no interruption between interior and exterior, thanks to the large windows looking out over the sea: “I continue to imagine boats, even very large ones, as if they were lofts, therefore very open and livable spaces, and above all with a way to be in contact with its surroundings”. Design proposals, icons from great masters, objects from the Orient and trouvé objects all blend together to give the environment a touch of unprecedented hospitality.
Sanlorenzo has paid close attention to environmental sustainability with a renewed awareness of context and production processes: everything is built with low-impact procedures and materials developed by the shipyard. The combination of new technology in lighting, lowconsumption on-board systems, thermal insulation from the special glass used, and large energy reserve from lithium batteries all allow SX88 to offer from 4 to 8 hours of “zero emissions” while keeping all the boat’s features operational. These solutions reward the SX88 with Rina Green Class. This is a constant exchange of innovation, design, and class.
