Inside Nature
ICONIC ARCHITECTURE | Chiara Melani
Architecture, urban planning, and design: the highest quality, excellent details and creation of an integrated tailor-made strategy.
Originally from Bolzano, Peter Pichler’s prestigious and international training includes the offices of Zaha Hadid in London, Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam, and Delugan Meissi in Vienna; he then returned to Italy and founded Peter Pichler Architecture together with his wife Silvana Ordinas in 2015.
A recurring motif in all of his projects is the architecture’s balanced integration into the surrounding context, and design solutions are determined through sustainability, value engineering, and rationalization. Fundamental cornerstones include space layout, structure, construction process, and cost reduction, and are reinforced in the mixed-use development project in Taiping, China that the architectural firm recently won. It consists of a boutique hotel, residential apartments, offices, shops, parks, and parking; it stands on a hill within a forest in Taiping, about 30 kilometers from Kunming.

Vernacular Chinese elements are found in the wooden façade, embodying an idea to connect the woods with parks inside the site, and in the layered landscape that circumnavigates ellipse-shaped towers creating a uniform continuum with surrounding nature.
The perception of the landscape is enhanced by the use of bamboo on residential walls, as well as roof gardens, offering a breathtaking view of the skyline over Taiping’s surrounding forests.
