A Perfect Day

ICONIC HOTEL | Hotel Principe di Savoia Milano

Hotel Principe di Savoia, or simply The Principe, is a historic hotel in the center of Milan that overlooks Piazza della Repubblica and its gardens. It opened in the 20th century as Hotel Du Nord, then became Hotel Principe di Savoia under the artistic direction of architect Cesare Tenca in what was then-called Piazza Fiume, rising a total of ten floors.

The Duke of Windsor, Charlie Chaplin, Aristotele Onassis and Maria Callas are among the renowned guests to chose the aristocratic elegance of its timeless hospitality. “I am a traveler. I am a nomad. I rarely sleep in the same bed more than three or four nights. And I know hotel life better than anyone” (Diane Von Furstenberg).

It is a pleasant place where luxury and stylistic perfection intertwine and accompany architectural memories of a historic house that prevails over the city, in all its splendor. An imaginary day at Hotel Principe di Savoia starts at 12:00 with a mouth-watering selection of Italian salami handcrafted by the Lombardian company “Salumi Pasini – Taste of Excellence” and wine pairings. It is all served at the Salotto Lobby Lounge where renowned architect Thierry Despont designed the explosion of creativity.

Now a New Yorker but with French origins, Despont was chosen by General Manager Ezio Indiani for his unique and inventive use of fabrics, materials, and installations created by the finest Italian craftsmen.

The Salotto’s style is decorative and contemporary, expressed in regal furnishings covered with fine Italian wool, in the walls with slabs of precious Carrara marble, and in the carved wooden boiseries with theatrical touches of volutes. A monumental work of art – a painting by Luca Giordano – and the spectacular Barovier and Toso chandelier with 48 Murano glass arms both complement the Salotto.

Using the same vision, Thierry Despont has made the Principe Bar more vibrant, with references to Italian design from the 60s and 70s; this is seen in the radiant walls reaching above the bar counter, a rich selection of bottles in view, and countertops covered in contrasting brightly-colored strips of Murano glass. For a business lunch or friendly meetings, Hotel Principe di Savoia’s restaurant Acanto has the wooded charm of a rural oasis. It opened in 2006 with an independent entrance along Piazza della Repubblica and was designed by Studio Celeste dell’Anna Design.

Large wall-to-wall windows looking out on the Italian garden create a continual game between inside and outside, thus invoking an evocative dreamy atmosphere, and becoming a game of lights in the evening. Colors, flavors, emotions: Tavolo Cristallo creates a unique sensory experience specially made for guests. Arising from the partnership with some of the most prestigious design brands such as Swarovski, Luxury Living, and Stefano Ricci Home, Tavolo Cristallo is Ristorante Acanto’s gastronomic novelty.

Panels with Swarovski crystals, the result of collaboration between the famous Austrian company and interior designer Celeste Dell’Anna, surround the lavishly dressed table with mise en place by Stefano Ricci Home; furnishings are from the Heritage and Bentley collection for Luxury Living. Chef Alessandro Buffolino creates specific menus with impressive dishes and engages diners’ senses during dinner; everything is custom made based on the evening’s theme.

From the moment a reservation is made until the day of the event, guests are followed and pampered by an Ambassador who takes care of every single aspect, providing an event built entirely around the client’s every request and expectation. There are many upcoming events: Evening menu: 4 hands with Chef Pietro D’Agostino – Ristorante La Capinera (January 30), Evening Menu Sommelier Cantina Ferrari (February 17), Evening Menu: Sommelier Cantina Banfi (January 17).

With the creation of an open kitchen, made for the first time in Italy by Paul Valet, diners can take part in a live cooking show and admire the multi-faceted talents of Chef Alessandro Buffolino. Savor his new a la carte menu and elite interpretation of classic culinary dishes, and enjoy exclusive moments with guests of honor.

These include Claudio Ruta, the starred executive chef of La Fenice at Hotel Villa Carlotta in Ragusa (1 Michelin Star since 2010) for an evening dedicated to authentic Sicilian flavors, and also starred chef Riccardo Bassetti from La Tavola at Hotel Il Porticciolo (1 Michelin Star since 2017) for a dinner prepared together with chef Alessandro Buffolino, as well as a gourmet dinner with wine pairings from renowned Tuscan Winery Rocca di Frassinello.

For the evening selection, the Chef prepares every dish down to the smallest details in order to enhance flavors and presentation. Finally, every month there is a special tasting with dishes from the a la carte menu and wine pairings, and every Thursday evening is enlivened with light background music, the soundtrack for an unforgettable evening.

For some relaxation, Ristorante Acanto opens its doors for Sunday Brunch, featuring a rich buffet with both sweet and savory treats, fresh fish, and eggs cooked any way you prefer from the a la carte menu. Any opportunity is the right one to go up to the tenth floor and indulge in an atmosphere of both physical and emotional well-being at Club 10 Fitness & Beauty Center, overlooking the panoramic skyline of the city, just steps away from the most famous Milanese shopping streets.

This urban spa has become the most exclusive destination for wellness in Milan: it features changing rooms in fine mahogany wood, showers in multicolored marble, complimentary soft bathrobes and slippers, and everything from a two-hour Thai massage to Ritual Spa treatments inspired by natural elements. Finally, the large solarium terrace furnished with chaise-lounges is ideal for enjoying fresh juices, smoothies, and light snacks as a post spa treat. It is the picture of celebration after a welcoming day typical of sophisticated care and attention, handed down from time immemorial.
